The leading US based information technology research and advisory firm Gartner has ranked cloud computing as the top strategic information technology in the world today. Cloud computing is defined by technological businesses and standard organizations in the world in different points of view.
The US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has defined cloud computing as:
"... a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction."
Cloud computing has been a part of FPT's long-term strategy since early 2010 and FPT IS is now able to provide this service to customers in Vietnam.
FPT expects cloud computing will be the leverage for the company to supply electronic services to e-citizens in the future. It aims to coordinate its communications infrastructure with its experience in systems integration, advanced software skills and extensive software development resources to provide a full range of private and public cloud computing services for organizations, enterprises and individuals. FPT also plans to build a cloud computing ecosystem in which FPT member units and independent software vendors (ISVs) will work together to promote the development of this new technology.
FPT has also signed cooperation agreements with the leading companies developing cloud computing in Vietnam. On May 18, 2010, it signed an agreement with the information and network security firm Trend Micro to cooperate in researching and developing open source cloud computing services to provide the advantages of cloud computing to Vietnamese organizations and citizens.
On May 24, 2010, FPT and Microsoft Vietnam signed a memorandum of understanding in Hanoi to promote the development of cloud computing in Vietnam. Accordingly, Microsoft Vietnam and FPT will research opportunities for cloud computing in the country and implement tested commercial models.
After more than a year of extensive research, FPT IS and its partners have developed appropriate cloud computing services and technologies for Vietnam and have been providing them to organisations and individuals since August 2011.
FPT IS can now offer the following cloud computing services to its customers:
- Consulting on and implementing private cloud solutions using technologies from the world's leading companies including Microsoft, IBM, and VMware.
- Transitioning existing applications and systems into cloud computing.
- Integrating internal and external cloud computing systems.
- Supporting and maintaining system operations on the cloud.
- Hosting all or part of the communication infrastructure, office applications at the FPT data center.
- Hosting business applications on the cloud.
